Before Miss Without Papers, Evangelia Kranioti carried out an artistic residency in Lebanon, allowing her to discover Beirut’s complex social landscape (2015 Hyères Fashion & Photography festival, Elie Saab award). In her Sunlight / Unlight series on architecture and the feminine figure, the city is represented as an almost science-fictional enclave on the Mediterranean, whose remains date from the future's past; a palimpsest of urban traces and distant war memories, between legacy and loss. While conflicts lurk a few kilometres north or south, the women in the pictures seem to be moving straight forward inside the din of History, defying the abyss that surrounds them.
