Miss Without Papers sheds light on the invisible exiles of the Asian and African workers who come to Lebanon through an opaque domesticity system called kafala, that creates conditions of modern slavery across the Middle East. Migrant workers recruited via the kafala, have their passports and visas tied to their employer’s sole approval, thus becoming extremely vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Shot mostly on their Sunday outings in Beirut, these one-day Misses pose with symbolic sashes, created by local artisans for the project. Miss Without Papers is part of Era Incognita, the artist's ongoing project on displacement and Mediterranean exiles.
