The Messengers

The Messengers

The Messengers is a large-scale project in progress, echoing the migratory crisis in the Mediterranean through the prism of myth. Its first chapter, the video installation All the Roads, features African migrants walking through interstitial areas of Rome, carrying "hermai" heads in their arms. Copies of antiques from the Villa Médicis, specially created for the project, these sculptures represent the god Hermes: the messenger of gods in Greek mythology, guardian of passages and borders. Hermes is embodied in these foreigners who wander in the capital of the ancient empire bearing the weight of history as a message to be delivered or an enigma to be deciphered. The Messengers is Evangelia Kranioti's fellowship project at the Villa Médicis-Académie de France à Rome (2021-22) and part of her ongoing research on displacement and Mediterranean exiles.
